On 31 August 2026 the Hellenic Coast Guard reported that a Polish-flagged sailing yacht had run aground near the islet of Kouloura in the Methoni Strait, off the south-western tip of the Peloponnese, and was taking on water. Two foreign nationals were aboard. The wind was north-easterly, force 3. A private boat carrying a civilian diver went out to the yacht, followed by a second private boat bringing coast guard officers to the scene. Both people aboard were reported to be in good health, with no injuries. The published reports, which all repeat the same coast guard statement, do not name the yacht, give her size or say what caused the grounding, and they do not say whether she was refloated, towed in or lost. What is on the record is a grounding in a light breeze, close to an islet, with help that came from private boats before the coast guard's own.

SeaWise noteLight wind and good visibility are when groundings happen, because nobody expects them. Short cuts between islands and islets deserve a proper pilotage plan and a watch on the depth, whatever the weather.
Lessons learned

What it teaches.

  • 1
After touching bottom, check the bilge and keel at once. Water ingress after a grounding may start slowly and then increase as the boat works or refloats on the tide.
